Black Tech Weekly aims to change the narrative around Black founders in mainstream media
PR Newswire Black Tech Week (BTW) has recently launched a new media division, Black Tech Weekly, a development designed to highlight the valuable contributions of Black founders, partners, and ecosystems globally.
Brian Brackeen, co-owner of Black Tech Week, has commented on the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Black founders in mainstream media. He noted that the coverage often highlights adversity rather than the innovation and achievements in their journeys. With the establishment of Black Tech Weekly, Brackeen aims to shift this narrative, presenting a more authentic representation of Black business culture.
Black Tech Weekly has already made substantial strides by securing partnerships with several industry leaders, including Inc. Magazine, and NBCUniversal. The influence and engagement capacity of these alliances aim to project the noteworthy stories of Black innovators to a wider audience, which is expected to be over 100 million people per month. Specifically, the partnership with NBCUniversal will lead to the production of customized content and exclusive events, enriching Black Tech Week’s conference in July and beyond.
Barrett McCree, Vice President, Advertising and Partnerships, NBCUniversal, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Black Tech Weekly, recognizing the organization’s influential presence and transformative impact within the tech community.
Black Tech Weekly has ensured its autonomy through a unique agreement with its media partners that allows it to retain full editorial control across all channels. This decision safeguards the consistency and integrity of its content. The partners have also agreed to cross-post content across their respective platforms under the Black Tech Weekly brand, a strategic move to maintain brand uniformity.
Scott Omelianuk, Editor in Chief of Inc. Business Media, spoke positively of the partnership with Black Tech Weekly. He believes the partnership will allow Inc. to further its mission and bring a more diverse community of founders together.
Additional Black-owned publications such as Rolling Out and Black Wall Street Times are joining the initiative as part of Black Tech Weekly’s efforts to amplify voices and narratives shaping Black tech culture.
Candice Matthews Brackeen, co-owner of Black Tech Week, expressed a vision for a media landscape where Black creators and entrepreneurs are celebrated for their contributions and innovative ideas. This vision is what Black Tech Weekly aims to realize.
Black Tech Week will take place from July 18-20 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Black Tech Weekly is currently inviting media partners and content creators who align with their mission to join their initiative.
