Non-profit Organization Leads Educational Effort

In an era marked by health disparities, The Balm In Gilead, Inc. (TBIG), a national non-profit organization, has taken steps to facilitate a discussion concerning prostate cancer among Black men in the United States. Scheduled for June 27, 2023, at 7:00 pm ET, this online event will be held via Zoom. Interested participants must register in advance through this link: https://bit.ly/43rArw3.

Prostate cancer is notably more prevalent among Black men as compared to their white counterparts. According to TBIG, 174 out of every one hundred thousand African American men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, whereas the number for white men stands at 105. The webinar aims to investigate the possible reasons for this disparity and the reluctance of Black men in seeking medical screening and treatment.

Rev. Dr. Nathaniel T. Brooks, a senior pastor of Greater St. John Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, will be moderating the event. Dr. Brooks is known for his involvement in community cancer education.

Additionally, Fenwa Milhouse, MD, a urologist and co-owner of Down There Urology in Chicago, will share her professional insights.

The webinar will also feature Dr. Lionell Sabb and his wife, Cynthia Sabb, who will share their personal experience after Dr. Sabb was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022.

The webinar will explore how families and faith communities can contribute to building awareness regarding prostate cancer, and encourage early screening and intervention.

The Balm In Gilead, Inc., has a 35-year history of working towards improving the health status of individuals of African descent by providing support to faith institutions.

As the date of the webinar approaches, the aim remains to foster an environment of education and understanding. Prostate cancer’s disproportionate impact on Black men calls for a thoughtful examination of the facts and collective effort in addressing the issue.
