Shattering Barriers: How TSU is Expanding Opportunities Through Ice Hockey
As the puck glides on the ice for the inaugural season in 2024, Tennessee State University (TSU) will not just be playing a game; it will be skating into history. In a groundbreaking move, TSU becomes the first historically black college or university (HBCU) to offer men’s ice hockey at the collegiate level. While the presence of ice hockey at TSU heralds a new dawn, the university’s rich athletic legacy continues to underpin its ambitions. Tennessee State University announces this audacious endeavor at Bridgestone Arena on June 28, 2023, culminating years of collaborative efforts with the Nashville Predators (TSU News Service).
In February 2022, just over a year before this historic announcement, the National Hockey League (NHL) hosted the Black Hockey History Tour at TSU’s Hale Stadium. This event represented a harbinger of things to come and a significant step in diversifying the sport. In its commitment to diversity and inclusion, TSU has extended the tapestry of its athletic prowess to encompass a sport where historically there has been limited representation from the African American community.
TSU’s partnership with the Nashville Predators precedes the inception of the ice hockey program. The Nashville Predators allied with TSU for the ‘One Million in One Month’ fundraising campaign in February 2020 and has since contributed to TSU’s scholarship programs and offered internship opportunities. The relationship between TSU and the Predators is emblematic of community engagement and shared aspirations.
Dialing back to 2021, College Hockey Inc. conducted a feasibility study, highlighting the importance of introducing ice hockey at an HBCU to foster diversity in sports. Now in 2023, as TSU readies to herald the game of ice hockey into its fold, it has not only the Nashville Predators but also the NHL, NHL Players Association, and College Hockey Inc. as allies.
The meticulous planning that characterizes this endeavor is evident in the establishment of a well-structured program. TSU is in the process of hiring a Director of Club Hockey Operations, tasked with fundraising, corporate partnerships, student-athlete recruitment, and managing the operations. The University’s Department of Athletics will provide comprehensive oversight, ensuring a strong foundation for the program.
While the team will commence as a club-level program, TSU harbors ambitions to ascend to NCAA Division I status for both men’s and women’s teams. This vision, albeit without a specified timeline, reflects the university’s unwavering commitment to building a program that not only excels in the game but also serves as an emblem of diversity and inclusion.
In an era where societal progress is often gauged by breakthroughs in technology, TSU’s foray into ice hockey represents an alternative dimension of progress – one that transcends physical prowess and taps into the fabric of social innovation. It is through such endeavors that institutions can nurture not just exceptional athletes but enlightened citizens who perceive sports as a medium of change.
In the words of Dr. Mikki Allen, TSU Director of Athletics, “Together, we celebrate the power of collaboration as we dismantle barriers, diversify the game, and propel hockey into a new era of inclusivity.” The reverberations of TSU’s ice hockey program will be felt far beyond the rink; it is the first stroke in painting a diverse and inclusive portrait of hockey for future generations.
