To mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, members of the Senate Democratic Caucus in Florida expressed their dismay over the Governor’s recently signed series of anti-LGBTQ bills. They highlighted the need for growth, fairness, and the safeguarding of personal liberties in their remarks.

Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book (D-Davie) expressed her concern, stating, “These bills represent a regression for a society that has fought tirelessly for progress and equality. Being gay or trans is not perverse or dangerous. What is truly dangerous is the legalization of discrimination we witnessed today.”

Highlighting the contradictions within these bills, Senator Book continued, “These measures contradict the professed values of elected Republicans. They claim to trust teachers, yet accuse them of indoctrination. They claim to support parental rights, but only for those who share their views. Let Floridians live their lives freely, equally, and without unwarranted and discriminatory government interference.”

Senator Geraldine Thompson (D-Orlando) raised concerns about the expansion of the Don’t Say Gay legislation, noting its potential negative impact on student-teacher relationships. She explained, “The expansion of the Don’t Say Gay legislation creates an unnecessary divide between students and teachers that serves neither party well. By withholding information, teachers inadvertently push students to seek answers from unreliable or misinformed sources. Students should be able to rely on trusted teachers for accurate information on sexual orientation. If we genuinely support parental rights, let parents decide what is best for their children regarding gender-affirming care.”

Senator Victor Torres (D-Orlando) vehemently opposed the bills, calling them “mean-spirited and unnecessary”.

They will not prevent individuals from being gay or transgender. However, they will stigmatize and endanger LGBTQ Floridians, leading to increased bullying and potential tragedies. These measures put young people, like my granddaughter, at risk. Our focus should be on teaching acceptance, not fostering hatred.”

Senator Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens) underscored the irony of Governor DeSantis signing such legislation on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.

Governor DeSantis received heavy criticism for his decision to pass laws on this day which are against the rights and liberties of Floridians; it was deemed as a disgraceful move.

These continued attacks on the LGBTQ community and young people demonstrate a misguided focus and a significant disconnect from the stance Floridians hold on these issues. True leaders prioritize the safety and well-being of ALL individuals, rather than selectively choosing who to protect. The people of Florida demand results and action from their elected officials, not division and assaults on our liberties.”

In conclusion, the statements from the Florida Senate Democrats reflect their unwavering commitment to equality and human rights.

By objecting to these anti-LGBTQ bills, people are showing the importance of acceptance and respect when building a fairer and more peaceful society.
