The curtains of our imagination are about to be drawn back as we prepare for a grand unveiling of the potential of African storytelling. In alignment with Africa Day, Disney+ has announced a pioneering project poised to illuminate our screens and minds this summer – “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire.” This anthology, a collection of 10 original animated short films, will exclusively premiere on Wednesday, July 5th on Disney+.
Disney+ released the key art for this ambitious project on May 25, 2023, a canvas that reflects the vibrant narrative palette of the African continent. Nigerian artist and director Shofela Coker, renowned for his film “Moremi,” masterfully crafted this illustration. Each brush stroke on this canvas speaks volumes about the richness of African cultures and the stories yet to be told.
“Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” is a convergence of diverse voices from Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. This assembly of creative minds from across the continent promises to teleport viewers into uncharted vistas of African futurology. The anthology weds science fiction and fantasy with the indelible fabric of the continent’s history and culture. Viewers will navigate through advanced civilizations, meet extraterrestrial beings, and encounter mythical creatures as they traverse these animated landscapes.
Featuring a stellar cast from around the world, “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” is a symphony of voices that include Florence Kasumba, Kehinde Bankole, Pearl Thusi, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Sheila Munyiva, Stycie Waweru, Candice Modiselle, Lillian Dube, Clementine Mosimane, and Mandisa Nduna. The anthology also presents a humorous undertone with the inclusion of comedians Tumi Morake, Sne Dladla, Tyson Ngubeni and the lyrical prowess of rappers Nasty C and Gigi Lamayne.
The anthology series is executive produced by Peter Ramsey, who co-directed the Oscar®-winning “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” along with Tendayi Nyeke and Anthony Silverston from Triggerfish, the principal studio behind the anthology.
