From Video Coordinator to Summer League Head Coach: Marlon Garnett’s Ascension

Marlon Garnett, a basketball lifer whose journey has spanned continents and cultures, has ascended to the helm of the Charlotte Hornets’ Summer League team, promising an exciting blend of global experience and a fresh approach to the sport.

From his humble beginnings as a video and player development coordinator in San Antonio in 2015, through assistant coaching positions in Phoenix and Atlanta, Garnett has steadily climbed the ladder. Now, the Charlotte Hornets have entrusted him with the role of Summer League Head Coach for 2023, marking a significant milestone in his ongoing career journey.

As the Hornets’ Summer League Head Coach, Garnett’s objective is clear: to organize and represent the team in the best way possible. This will be his second stint in this position, having previously served as Phoenix’s Summer League Head Coach in 2017. His background, including playing alongside Steve Nash at Santa Clara and 15 years of professional play across multiple countries, contributes to his unique coaching style.

His experience ranges from playing in different cultures and styles, notably in the stringent environment of Eastern Europe, to the very distinct experiences in countries like Iran. Going back to Garnett’s time in Iran, a place that isn’t commonly associated with American basketball players, he represented two clubs, Zob Ahan Isfahan and Mahram Tehran, between 2009 and 2011. Garnett’s time there was highlighted by helping Mahram Tehran secure their fourth of five consecutive Iranian Basketball Super League Championships in 2011, a testament to his international prowess.

Throughout his career, Garnett played in numerous countries, including Spain, Italy, Croatia, Iran, Puerto Rico, and Slovakia, following his stint with the Boston Celtics in the 1999 NBA season. His international resume only adds to the depth of his knowledge and understanding of the game, which he’s now set to bring to the Hornets’ Summer League team.
